Ardhanarishvara: The Divine Union of Shiva and Shakti

This rare architectural drawing captures Ardhanarishvara, the composite deity where the masculine (Shiva) and feminine (Shakti) energies coexist in one harmonious form. Sculpted into the monumental piers of the Pudu Mandapa, the figure represents cosmic balance, unity, and the inseparability of creation and dissolution.

Nayaka-Era Sculptural Brilliance, Rendered in Ink

Drawn around 1800 on English J. Whatman paper watermarked 1798, this work meticulously records one of the 124 intricately carved pillars of the Pudu Mandapa - the grand festival hall commissioned by Tirumala Nayak (r. 1623–59). Every curve of the deity, every ornamental motif, and every miniature panel is captured with architectural precision.

Warrior Iconography & Temple Aesthetics

Alongside Ardhanarishvara stands a youthful temple attendant, while the pier’s adjacent sculptural register (not shown in this frame but part of the same pier) includes an equestrian warrior raising a sword, typical of Nayaka narrative reliefs celebrating martial valor and royal patronage.

12×24 Vertical Heritage Print

The tall vertical format mirrors the proportions of the original stone pier. Printed on 350 GSM matte archival paper, this piece brings the grandeur of South Indian temple architecture into your home, studio, or cultural workspace.

Why You’ll Love It

This poster is a powerful blend of mythology and architecture. Ardhanarishvara - half Shiva, half Parvati - embodies a profound truth of Indian philosophy: that masculine and feminine forces are not opposites but complements. Paired with the ornate pier carvings and the serene attendant figure, the artwork becomes both devotional and scholarly.

Perfect for lovers of Shaiva traditions, architects, historians, dancers, yogic practitioners, and collectors of classical Indian art.
