Key Features

The Shri Durga Saptashati Puja Paddhati is a traditional ritual manual for the worship of the Divine Mother Chandika, the supreme Goddess celebrated in the Durga Saptashati (Devi Mahatmya). Its subtitle, Sadikutatmaka Trishakti Chandika Charya, describes its focus: the worship of Chandika as the threefold Shakti, embracing the three great forms of the Goddess, Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati, who preside over the three charitas of the Saptashati. The cover depicts these three Devis together beneath Lord Shiva, expressing the unity of the Mother’s powers in a single sacred worship.

The book is presented as the third part of the Saptashati, a companion to the recitation of the scripture itself. While the Saptashati recounts the glory and victories of the Goddess, this paddhati supplies what the worshipper needs to approach Her in proper ritual form: the procedures of puja, the sequence of observances, and the disciplined method by which the recitation becomes a complete act of worship. The text gives particular importance to the Navadurga avarana puja, the worship of the Goddess together with Her surrounding enclosures of attendant deities, alongside the path of the Saptashati.

The compiler, Jyotishi Baburam ‘Vashishtha’ of Deeg, a scholar of Hindi literature and a devotee of the Goddess, prepared this work as the sixth publication of the Vashishtha Sahitya Sadan. It was issued at Makar Sankranti in Vikram Samvat 2036 in a first printing of only one thousand copies, and made available through Lala Raghunath Prasad Poddar of Purani Deeg, Bharatpur. Notably, the book carried no monetary price: its stated “price” was that the reader perform the Navadurga avarana puja and the recitation of the Saptashati, a beautiful expression of the devotional spirit in which it was offered.

The book opens with a short Hindi couplet urging the worshipper to perform the daily rites according to proper method, with firm faith and trust, so as to become a vessel of the chosen deity’s grace. It is dedicated, with a reverent image of the sacred feet marked with auspicious symbols, to Paramahamsa Parivrajakacharya Sri 1008 Swami Vidyaranya Ji Ashram Maharaj, head of the Nigamanusandhana Prakashan Peetha, by Baburam ‘Vashishtha’ and Raghunath ‘Poddar’.

For devotees of Durga and Chandika, practitioners of the Shakta tradition, those who recite the Saptashati during Navaratri and throughout the year, and collectors of rare traditional ritual manuals, this paddhati is a valuable and authentic guide, presented here in Sanskrit with Hindi instruction in a single volume.
