Key Features

This refined and delicately rendered composition presents Lord Ganesha-the beloved elephant-headed remover of obstacles-seated gracefully upon a pink lotus on a terrace overlooking tranquil waters and distant hills. Dating to the early 19th century and painted in Patna, Bihar, in the distinctive Company School style, this exquisite watercolour captures the deity with remarkable naturalism, iconographic precision, and gentle devotional charm.

Depicted with four arms and his characteristic single tusk, Ganesha is shown in a moment of serene benevolence. In his upper left hand he rests an axe (parashu) against his shoulder, while his lower left hand holds a delicate lotus blossom. In his upper right hand he offers a ball of laddu (modaka) from which his faithful vahana, the rat, eagerly nibbles, and in his lower right hand he holds a sacred manuscript-emblem of wisdom and learning. Crowned and adorned with lavish jewellery and a floral garland, his gentle pot-bellied form radiates warmth and grace.

Before the deity are laid generous offerings-two platters, one piled high with laddu sweets and the other bearing an abundance of fruits, alongside a ceremonial jug-a tender depiction of the devotional feast offered to the god famed for his love of sweets. The naturalistic rendering of the rat, the fruits, and the deity's features reflects the refined observational style that distinguished the Company School, which blended traditional Indian iconography with European watercolour techniques.

Set against a soft, atmospheric landscape of water and hills beneath a gentle sky, and framed by a bold black border, this Patna masterwork offers a rare and beautifully preserved vision of the beloved Ganesha. As the most widely worshipped of all deities, invoked at the start of every new undertaking, this refined portrait of the auspicious remover of obstacles is especially cherished for home altars and spaces of devotion.
