According to tradition, as Shiva dances, matter, energy, and sound are set into motion through the vibration of his drum, the triple qualities of creation manifesting as all spheres of the universe begin to operate rhythmically in harmony with the movement of his body. Assembled around the dancing lord is a grand celestial orchestra of gods, goddesses, and Shiva's ganas. The six-headed Kartikeya beats a circular drum and bell, the four-armed Ganesha plays the vina, and Parvati (Uma) strikes the circular metal cymbals, while Nandi the bull sits in rapt attention, absorbed in the divine music. To the right, Banasura, Shiva's ardent devotee, plays innumerable drums and instruments simultaneously with his many arms, and to the left a blue-hued flute-player adds to the swelling symphony of sound.
