Key Features

This sumptuously composed and devotionally complete work presents the Assembly of Rama - the Uttara Rama Charitra, the enthronement of Rama at Ayodhya following his fourteen years of exile - one of the most beloved and most widely reproduced subjects in the entire Indian sacred print tradition. The composition, held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, depicts Rama seated in full royal splendor under the royal parasol, his deep blue complexion and signature yellow garments - the color of asceticism worn in the form of a king - the unmistakable center around which the entire composition organizes itself. Sita sits beside him, the three brothers Lakshmana, Bharata, and Shatrughna attend with the dignified composure of princes restored to their rightful places, and at Rama's feet Hanuman kneels in his most characteristic attitude of pure, unself-conscious devotion - reading from the text of Rama's glory with the complete absorption of the greatest bhakta in the tradition.

Before Rama's throne, his sandals (chappals) rest on a cushion - the most theologically specific detail in the entire composition and the one that elevates it from royal portraiture to complete devotional statement. These are the sandals that Bharata placed on the throne of Ayodhya during Rama's exile and worshipped as the embodiment of Vishnu (Vishnupada) - the sacred footwear that stood in for the absent king and governed the kingdom in his name. Their presence in the foreground of the composition declares that the Rama being enthroned here is not merely returning from exile but returning as the Vishnu-principle to its proper sovereign seat - the human and the divine simultaneously restored to their rightful place. The sage Vasishtha - one of the revered authors of the Rigveda - sits to the right as the family priest whose presence consecrates the royal assembly with the authority of the most ancient Vedic lineage.
