Key Features
The Stotra Path Sangraha is a devotional anthology of Sanskrit hymns prepared by the Shri Shri Jagadamba Sharika Chakreshwar Sanstha of Hari Parvat, the institution devoted to the worship of Mata Sharika at her sacred hill in Srinagar. Compiled for daily recitation by devotees, it gathers into one handy volume the hymns most cherished in the worship of the Divine Mother in Kashmir.
The book opens with a salutation to Mata Sharika herself: the devotee bows to the Goddess seated on the Pradyumna peak, adorned by the circle of the Mothers, the presiding Lady of the sacred seat, who abides in the form of a rock. This verse captures the heart of the Sharika tradition, in which the Mother is worshipped on Hari Parvat in her self-manifested form, revered as the living Shri Chakra.
A valuable Hindi introduction (Bhumika) places the collection in its sacred context. It describes Kashmir as one of the foremost centres of Shakta worship since time immemorial, the home of shrines of Sharada, Jwala, Maharajni and Sharika. It speaks of the five principal abodes of the Goddess of Shri Vidya in Srinagar, Rajarajeshvari, Kaleshvari, Mahashri, Sadbhavashri and Lokeshvari, through whose presence, the introduction explains, the city received its name. It goes on to recount the sanctity of Sharika Parvat: the self-existent Mahachakra established there, the appearance of the Shri Chakra with the hill itself, which is therefore also known as Shri Parvat, and the hill’s other names, Pradyumna Shikhara, Sharika Peetha and Pradyumna Peetha, the last associated with the ancient king Pradyumna. The introduction also recalls how Mata Sharika manifested to subdue a mighty demon.
The hymns that follow include celebrated texts of the Devi tradition, among them verses from the Durga Saptashati, the names of the nine Durgas, Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandaghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidatri, and the Bhavani Sahasranama Stotram, the thousand names of Bhavani, which opens with radiant meditation verses on the Goddess bearing her weapons, mounted on her lion, and sporting at the centre of the Chakra. An errata page at the front of the book reflects the care taken by the editors to present an accurate text for recitation.
For devotees of Mata Sharika, Bhavani and Durga, members and students of the Kashmiri Pandit tradition, practitioners of Shri Vidya, and all who recite Sanskrit stotras in daily worship, this collection is a treasured devotional companion from one of the most sacred shrines of Kashmir.
