Key Features

This rare and historically significant group photograph captures Swami Vivekananda seated among his fellow monks, disciples, and devoted followers in Madras (present-day Chennai) in early 1897, shortly after his triumphant return to India from his celebrated mission to the West. Taken at Castle Kernan, where Swamiji stayed during his visit, this warm and dignified assembly preserves a treasured moment among the community that had eagerly awaited his homecoming.

Seated at the center of the group is Swami Vivekananda himself, flanked by his brother-monks of the Ramakrishna Order and his disciples. Seated in the chairs beside him are Swami Shivananda and Swami Niranjanananda-fellow disciples of Sri Ramakrishna-along with Swami Sadananda, his own devoted disciple who had been drawn to him during his wandering years, and Tarapada, a monk from another order. These companions had journeyed to Colombo to receive Swamiji upon his return and to present him with fresh ochre robes befitting an Indian sannyasin.

Standing among the assembly are several of Vivekananda's most devoted followers, including Alasinga Perumal-the tireless Madras disciple who had helped raise funds for Swamiji's journey to the Parliament of the World's Religions-and J.J. Goodwin, the Englishman who became Vivekananda's faithful stenographer, recording his lectures in America and devotedly following him thereafter. The front row includes esteemed local devotees such as Biligiri Iyengar and M.C. Nanjunda Rao, representing the fervent community of Madras admirers who had championed his cause.

This group portrait offers an intimate and moving glimpse into the circle of monks and devotees who surrounded Vivekananda at a pivotal moment in his life-his return to a homeland that received him as a hero. It stands as a cherished historical record of the fellowship, devotion, and shared purpose that would soon give rise to the Ramakrishna Mission and a global spiritual movement.
