Key Features

This powerful composition captures one of the most profound episodes from Vishnu Purana - the story of Vamana, the fifth avatar of Vishnu, and the humbled King Mahabali. Vamana stands poised in the foreground as a young Brahmin boy, draped in a simple saffron dhoti with a sacred thread and beads, holding a tall staff as he raises one foot upward-frozen in the very act of taking his cosmic strides.

The narrative unfolds with quiet intensity: Mahabali, the powerful Asura king known for his generosity, had granted the boy Vamana any boon he desired. When Vamana modestly asked for only three paces of land, Mahabali agreed without hesitation, amused by what seemed a trivial request. Vamana then began to expand, covering the earth with his first stride and the heavens with his second, revealing his true form as Vishnu.

In this scene, Mahabali is depicted kneeling in complete surrender, head bowed and hands folded, having realized the divine nature of the boy before him. True to his word, the king offers his own head for the third step, an act of humility and dharma that would come to define his legacy. The ceremonial vessel, scattered flowers, and temple pillars in the background lend the scene its ritual gravity, marking this as a sacred moment of offering and cosmic transformation.

The composition beautifully reflects Raja Ravi Varma's mastery in capturing both divine grandeur and human vulnerability within a single frame-Vamana's calm, elevated poise juxtaposed against Mahabali's devoted submission, together forming one of the most celebrated stories of humility triumphing over pride.
