Chromolithograph by Raja Ravi Varma Press
Key Features
This dramatic chromolithograph illustrates one of the most sacred events in Hindu belief - the descent of the celestial river Ganga from heaven to Earth, a moment that symbolizes divine grace, purification, and cosmic balance.
At the center stands Lord Shiva, poised on a rocky ledge, prepared to receive the powerful torrent of the heavenly river. The river goddess Ganga descends gracefully from the heavens above, represented as a radiant celestial figure flowing downward in a column of water and light. Without Shiva’s intervention, the force of her fall would have shattered the Earth.
Shiva’s calm yet powerful stance reflects his role as the cosmic protector. According to the legend, he captured the raging waters of Ganga within his matted locks, releasing them gently so that the sacred river could flow safely across the land.
Beside him stands Nandi, Shiva’s faithful bull, observing the divine moment with devotion. Parvati, Shiva’s consort, watches with reverence, while the sage Jahnu stands nearby. In later traditions, the river would pass through Jahnu’s ashram, leading to the name Jahnavi, another sacred title for the Ganges.
The story originates in the Ramayana and Puranas, where King Bhagiratha performs severe penance to bring the heavenly river down to Earth in order to liberate the souls of his ancestors. Shiva’s role in controlling the descent becomes one of his most celebrated forms - Gangādhara, the bearer of the Ganga.
Ravi Varma’s composition captures both the grandeur and spirituality of this cosmic event. The towering mountains, open skies, and dramatic vertical movement of the descending goddess emphasize the moment when heaven and earth are joined through divine intervention.
This scene represents more than mythology - it embodies the origin of the Ganges, India’s most sacred river and a timeless symbol of purification, life, and spiritual renewal.
